Yreka, CA

Yreka Community

The county seat of Siskiyou County, Yreka, CA, sits at 2,500 feet elevation and was founded in the 1850s by gold miners.  The high school mascot is the Gold Miner, and the central exit off I-5 into town sports a spectacular gold miner sculpture by artist Ralph Starrit.  Mark Twain claims in his autobiography that the name Yreka came from a bakery sign, painted on canvas and set to dry upside down with the ‘b’ not showing, so that a stranger to the town read it backwards.
